VE and VJ commemoration
The City of Wakefield, and Wakefield Cathedral, are to play a major role in the largest anniversary event taking place in West Yorkshire. Initiated by Her Majesty's Lord-Lieutenant, Dr Ingrid Roscoe, and aided by the Dean of Wakefield and the Military, the event, which is to bring both the VE and VJ Anniversaries together, will take place in Wakefield on Sunday 26th June. Veterans Associations from across the County are taking part A large parade has been organised which will include many veterans associations, and hopefully a good number of veterans. Wartime military vehicles will take part together with some modern day vehicles. Music will be provided by the West Yorkshire Police Band and the Band and Buglers of the Light Division. The parade will finish at the Cathedral where an Anniversary Service will be conducted. During the service a token number of local Reservists recently returned safely from Iraq will be awarded the Iraq Campaign Medal. Following the service there will be a fly past by the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Lancaster Bomber Wakefield City Council are very kindly providing refreshments after the event in the Town Hall. To complete this very important day, the East and West Riding Regiment TA are then holding a Band Concert in Clarence Park with the Band of the Light Division performing the Sounding Retreat Ceremony. During this event over 100 Reservists from the Regiment who have served in Iraq will receive the Iraq Campaign Medal Associations who wish to take part and who have not already been contacted should contact Kevin Sharp at the Lieutenancy Office or Lt Cdr David Dennis (01943 875608). Timings - Parade assembled by 1.30 pm; Parade moves off 2.0pm; Cathedral Service 3.0pm to 4.0pm; Fly Past 4.30pm. Clarence Park Band Concert begins 5.30pm. |
