Stan was born in the Lake District but raised and educated in York. After commissioned Service with the Regular Army he joined the GKN Group as a management trainee and both within the group and in other capacities spent much time promoting UK manufacturing in West and Central Europe and the Far East. He was offered and accepted chairmanship of the West Yorkshire Probation Service and charged with its conversion to Trust status. Simultaneously he took on the chairmanship of Local Care Direct, a Social Enterprise feeding into the NHS. He completed both terms of office in 2014. He mentors small companies and is an occasional volunteer lecturer on the Leeds Beckett University Business Studies course.
In parallel with his career, he was elected chair of the Yorkshire Ridings Branch of the Institute of Directors of which he was a Fellow and subsequently took on the role of Regional Director for the Yorkshire Region. He was appointed Chair of Governors of a school in Bramley and became involved with the Duke of York’s Community Initiative for which he is now the W Yorks County Lead. He was also a member of the Territorial Army and was awarded the Territorial Decoration in 1987. He remains a member of the Yorkshire and Humberside Reserve Forces and Cadets Association. He serves as an elected member of Leeds Minster Council and as Honorary President of 868 Sqn RAF Cadets in Mirfield. He is the Hon President of the Royal British Legion Leeds Central Branch.
Stan is an active fundraiser for charity especially Age UK and Epilepsy Action – this follows the death of his youngest son, Edward, as a result of a grande mal attack from which Edward did not recover. The fund raising has included involvement with two 3Peaks events.
