Colin Blair, MBE DL

Colin Blair has been at the University of Huddersfield for more than 29 years, during which time he has been instrumental in managing the transformation of its academic estate into one of the best in the UK’s HE sector. Before he joined the University, Colin worked as a building services design engineer for contracting organisations. He is a Chartered Engineer, a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers, gained an MSc (Distinction) in Facilities Management and was named a BIFM Graduate of the Year in 2000.

Until recently Colin chaired the Learning and Development Group within the Association of Directors of Estates (AUDE) and has completed twelve years on the National Executive Committee of the Organisation. In recognition he was the winner of the inaugural AUDE Long Term Contribution Award in 2015. Colin is passionate about ensuring that Higher Education is accessible to all irrespective of gender, ethnicity, social background or disability. His transformative leadership has been recognised by his peers, and in 2014 won the Estates and Facilities Team of the Year at the national Education Estates Awards. In 2017 he was awarded Companion status by the Chartered Management Institute in recognition of his outstanding management ability and in 2018 the Peter Midwood Life Time Achievement Award by the Premises and Facilities Magazine.

Colin gives freely of his time to help others, this currently includes being an Associate Governor at Greenhead College in Huddersfield, a Trustee of the Abbey Multi-Academy Trust in Leeds, a Board Member of the Community of the Resurrection in Mirfield and the provider of property advice to schools and community groups around his home town. Colin is always the first to volunteer to help charitable causes and has given up his Christmas day to feed the crew and back up team of the regional air ambulance and to work in the kitchen of the local hospice. He also has a wonderful sense of fun and brings great humour to University charity auctions and pantomimes.

In the 2016 New Year’s Honours List, Colin Blair was recognised for his services to Higher Education and the community of Huddersfield with the award of an MBE.
